Most of the Norwegian public was taken by surprise yesterday, during the prominent visit of Russian President Medvedev. After more than 40 years of negotiation, an agreement was signed in Oslo on the borderline between Russia and Norway in the Barents Sea.
Having established predictability in the region, we should now expect increased activity. Both countries have a lot to gain from this agreement, and it is marking a significant progress in overall relationship between the two countries. “The most important day in the relationship between Russia and Norway” says Prime Minister Stoltenberg.
The Russian Duma and the Norwegian Storting – the two country’s house of representatives now need to ratify the agreement. Anyhow, “spasiba” and “tusen takk” to all the good diplomatic efforts and craftmanship done on both sides. A new era can begin.
The deal came as a surprise, and it has taken international analysts quite some time to catch it. International media is about to discover the scope of it.
